cells and tissues Flashcards
what are organelles
where cells have their own organs
give examples of different organelles in a cell
nucleus
mitchondria
ribosomes
what does the cytoplasm contain
nutrients, chemicals and other solutes
what does the nucleus include
it contains the cells DNA which is used for instructions in order to replicate the cells itself with the same DNA and building every protein in the body
what is the mitochondria
known as the ‘power house’ of the cells which is involved in aerobic respiration where chemical energy is made available to the cell
what is cellular respiration
the process by which cells make energy. they use glucose and oxygen to produce carbon dioxide, water and ATP
what is ATP
organicl molecule containing high energy phosphate bonds
what does ATP do
provides the energy for cellular work
helps with life processes
mainly it gives you energy
what is the role of the cell membrane
seperates cells from the surrounding environment
how are the two layers of the cell membrane arranged
tail to tail where the head is exposed but the tail isn’t, this is because the heads are hydrophilic and the tails are hydrophobic
what do cell membrane let certain molecules go in and out the cell
cell membranes have pores (holes) which are selectively permeable meaning that It allows some molecules in and keeps the other molecules out
what are the two types of transport within the cell
passive and active
does passive transport use energy
no
does active transport use energy
yes
give examples of passive transport
diffusions and osmosis
