Cells and Their Organelles Flashcards
Tiny structures in a cell that carry out the life functions for the cell.
Organelles
Rigid (stiff) layer on the outside of plant cells and bacteria. Protects the cell and provides support.
Cell wall
Outer layer of a cell that controls what comes in and out of the cell. Needed materials enter here and wastes exit. Helps the cell do the life process of transport.
Cell membrane
Control center of cell, stores the DNA (hereditary material) in the cell. Carries out life process of regulation.
Nucleus
Powerhouse of the cell, where the cell does cellular respiration (making energy from glucose and oxygen. Carries out life process of respiration.
Mitochondria
A maze of passageways around the nucleus where ribosomes make proteins and send them along this “conveyor belt”. Carries out life process of transport.
Endoplasmic reticulum (er)
These are the workers of the cell, making proteins along the er. Carries out the life process of synthesis.
Ribosomes
Green organelles in plant and some protist cells. Makes glucose for the organism by doing photosynthesis. Contains chlorophyll.
Chloroplasts
What two organelles are found in plant cells but not animal cells?
Chloroplast, cell wall
How are plant and animal cells shaped differently?
Plant cells are rectangular and animal cells are rounder.
The basic unit of life that carries out all life functions…
The cell
Food provides all heterotrophic organisms with their main source of energy. What organelle uses this food to make the energy that is needed?
Mitochondria
