cells and microscopy Flashcards
what is the cell theory
- all cells are composed of one or more cells
- the cell is the basic structural and functional unit of all living organisms
- cells arise only from the division of preexisting cells
what do all cells have
plasma membrane, DNA, ribosomes and cytoplasm
what do DNA and RNA do
carry hereditary information and direct the manufacture of cellular molecules
why do cells need energy
to respond to changes in their environment, reproduce and pass on hereditary information
what do prokaryotic cells lack
a nucleus and internal compartmentalization
what do unicellular organisms do
carry out all activities necessary for life
what do multicellular organisms do
activities of life are divided among a number of specialized cells
what does light microscopes do
use light to illuminate the specimen
what does electron microscopes do
use electrons to illuminate the specimen (transmission and scanning)
