Cells and Anatomical Position Flashcards
What is the smallest level of matter organization in this course?
Atoms
What do atoms make up?
Molecules
What are the basic components of cells?
Organelles
Define a cell
A cell is the smallest unit of a living thing
Define organ
a discrete structure composed of two or more types of tissue that performs a function for the body
Define organ system
A group of organs that work together to complete a common function
In anatomical position, where do the palms and thumbs point?
In anatomical position, the palms face forwards and the thumbs point away from the body.
How would you describe the head in relation to the body?
The head is superior to the body.
How would you describe the feet in relation to the head?
The feet are inferior to the head.
How would you describe the sternum to the spine?
The sternum is anterior to the spine.
What anatomical structure is posterior to the nose?
The back of the head is posterior to the nose.
In what direction is medial? What is the opposing direction?
Towards the middle of the body from the sides. The opposing direction is lateral.
How would you describe the collarbone in relation to the breastbone and shoulder? What plane is this directionality on?
The collarbone is intermedial to the breastbone and shoulder. The collarbone is between the two other structures on the frontal plane.
How would you describe the toes in relation to the shins?
The toes are distal from the shins.
What describes the elbows in relation to the fingertips?
The elbows are proximal to the fingertips.
How would you describe the dermis to the epidermis?
The dermis is deep to the epidermis.
How would you describe the skin on a forearm to the radius?
The skin of the forearm is superficial to the radius under it.
Name some appendicular parts of the body.
These are the appendages. The two legs and two arms.
What big three structures make up the axial part of the body?
The head, neck and abdomen.
If somebody sliced me from in front of me, from the top of my head down to my belly button, which plane would he have cut me on?
The median (midsagittal) plane.
If I were to faceplant onto a meat grinder and you could only recover the back half of me, which plane would you observe?
The frontal plane.
If I had my legs and hips cut off, what plane would my guts spill out of me on?
The transverse plane.
What is the difference between midsagittal and parasagittal planes?
Parasagittal planes do not need to be in the middle of the body.
What are the two cavities located in the dorsal cavity?
The cranial cavity and the vertebral cavity.
What three cavities are located in the ventral cavity?
The thoracic cavity, abdominal cavity, and the pelvic cavity.
Where are the lateral pleural cavities located in relation to the mediastinum?
Lateral to the mediastinum.
