Cells Flashcards
Cell theory rules:
- All living things are made up one one or more cells and their products. 2. The cell is the simplest unit that is able to carry out all life processes. 3. All cells come from other cells.
What is a prokaryote?
A cell that does not contain a nucleus or other membrane-bound organelles.
What is an eukaryote?
A cell that contains a nucleus and other organelles, each surrounded by a thin membrane.
Cell membrane
Controls what goes in and out of the cell.
Cell wall
Rigid outer layer-plant cell only.
Cytoplasm
Gel-like fluid where organelles are found.
Mitochondria
Produces energy.
Lysosomes
Uses chemicals to break down food and worn out cell parts.
Vacuoles
Stores food, water, waste, and other materials.
Golgi Bodies
Receives protein and minerals from ER, packages them, and distributes them.
Chloroplasts
Captures energy from the sunlight and uses it to produce food in a plant cell.
Endoplasmic Reticulum
Has passageways that carry proteins and other materials from one part of the cell to the other.
Ribosomes
Assembles amino acids to create proteins.
Nucleus
Control centre and contains DNA.
Nucleolus
Found inside nucleus, produces ribosomes.
