Cells Flashcards
Plasma Membrane
Controls movement of substances into or out of the cell
Ribosomes
Involved in assembling proteins
- Found in ER or around cytoplasm
Endoplasmic Reticulum (ER)
Responsible for production, storing & transport of substances within the cell
- Rough ER holds ribosomes for creation of proteins
- Soft ER involved in synthesis of hormones, fats and lipids
Golgi Apparatus
Responsible for modifying proteins and packaging them in preparation for secretion
- Receives vesicles from ER containing protein
Mitochondria
Convert chemical energy into ATP
- Major site of energy production
- Use cellular respiration
Chloroplast
Involved in collecting light energy from the sun for photosynthesis
- found in some but not all plant cells
Vacuole
Primarily involved in storage of ions and various solutes
- Plant cells contain large vacuole
- Animal cells contain smaller vacuole
Cell Wall
Provides support to maintain cell shape
- Made of cellulose
Nucleus
Control centre of the cell.
- DNA located
- Responsible for the formation of ribosomes
