Cells Flashcards
It contains gentic material of cell (DNA) and nucleoli; site of RNA synthesis and ribosomal subunit assembly.
Nucleus
It is the basic unit of all organisms
Cell
Site of protein synthesis.
Ribosomes
It has many ribosomes attached; site of protein synthesis.
Rough ER
Facilitates the movement of chromosomes during cell division.
Centrioles
It is the network of microtubules; extends from the centrosome during cell division; distributes DNA equally to the resulting daughter cells.
Spindle fibers
Numerous short, hairlike organelles; move substances over surfaces of certain cells
Cilia
It increases surface area of certain cells; tiny, fingerlike projectings of the cell that increases the membranes surface area for more absorption; it can be seen superiorly; it is responsible for locomotion.
Microvilli
Contains enzymes that digest material taken into the cell.
Lysosome
Network of membranoustubesand canals winding through the interior of cell; manufactures molecules that make up cellular membranes
ER
It is the living material surrounding the nucleus.
Cytoplasm
Outermost component of a cell; acts as a selective barrier that determines what moves into and out of the cell; plays a role in communication bet cells
Cell membrane
Substances outside the cell
Extracellular
Site of lipid synthesis; participates in detoxification.
Smooth ER
Functions of the cell
Cell metabolism and energy use; synthesis of molecules such as proteins, nucleic acids, and lipids; communication; reproduction and inheritance
Site of aerobic respiration and the major site of ATP synthesis or energy conversion.
Mitochondrion/ Mitochondria
Movement INTO cells by vesicles /// movement OUT of cells by vesicles
Endocytosis /// exocytosis
The folds of the inner membrane in mitochondria called _______?
Cristae
