Cells Flashcards
What is a cell?
The fundamental structural and functional unit of every organism.
What are the two main types of cells?
Prokaryotic and Eukaryotic cells.
Which domains comprise prokaryotic cells?
Bacteria and Archaea.
What domain comprises eukaryotic cells?
Eukarya.
List the common features of all cell types.
- Cell membrane
- Cytoplasm
- Genetic material (DNA)
- Ribosomes
What is the function of the cell membrane?
Separates the intra-cellular environment from the extra-cellular environment.
What is cytoplasm?
A semi-fluid cell interior that holds cellular organelles.
What is the role of ribosomes in a cell?
Sites of protein synthesis.
How do we distinguish between prokaryotes and eukaryotes?
Based on the presence or absence of a nucleus.
Where is DNA located in eukaryotic cells?
In a membrane-bound organelle called the nucleus.
Where is DNA located in prokaryotic cells?
In a non-membrane bound region called the nucleoid.
What microscopy methods are used to study cells?
- Light microscopy
- Phase contrast microscopy
- Electron microscopy
What is cell fractionation?
A biochemical method used to separate cellular components and organelles.
What is the structure of the cell membrane?
A selectively-permeable double membrane (bilayer) comprised of hydrophilic phosphate heads and hydrophobic lipid tails.
What are the main lipid components of the cell membrane?
- Phospholipids (75%)
- Glycolipids (5%)
- Cholesterol (20%)
