Cells Flashcards
Who discovered cells and how?
Robert Hooke by looking at thin slices of cork
Rule 1 of cell theory
All living things are made of cells
Rule 2 of cell theory
Cells are the basic building blocks of life
Rule 3 of cell theory
All cells came from other cells
The two scientists that came up with cell theory
Theodor Schwann and Matthias Jakob Schleiden
Aerobic respiration
with oxygen
Anaerobic respiration
without oxygen
What makes up chloroplasts that give plants their green color
chlorophyll
What is the function of a chloroplast
To perform photosynthesis and produce chemical energy and glucose
What is the function of mitochondria?
To use cellular respiration and make ATP energy
What is the thing inside of mitochondria called?
The matrix
What is a plastid?
A membrane bound organelle inside of a cell
What is the structure of the cell membrane?
The phospholipid bilayer
The head of a phospholipid is
Hydrophillic
The tail of a phospholipid is
Hydrophobic
What are the two types of cells?
Prokaryotes and Eukaryotes
What is a prokaryote?
A cell with no membrane around their DNA or their organelles. Ex: bacteria
What is a eukaryote?
Cells with membranes around their DNA and organelles. Ex: PLants, animals, protists, and fungi.
What is the difference between plant and animal cells?
Animal cells have lysosomes, plant cells have a cell wall and chloroplasts
What are the levels of organization?
Organism, organ system, organs, tissues, cells, and (organelles).
