Cells Flashcards
What is a cell?
A cell is the basic unit of life.
Are there such things as one-cell organisms?
Yes, unicellular organisms like bacteria or yeast exist.
What does the nucleus look like?
Black circle
What does the nucleus do?
Controls all activities within cell
Contains genetic info to pass on to next generation
What is cytoplasm?
Jelly-like substance that fills the cell
Cell activities occur within it
How to tell the difference between cell wall and cell membrane?
Membrane in, wall out (like a castle)
What is cell membrane, and what does it do?
Partially-permeable layer that controls movement of substances in and out of the cell
What is cell wall, and what does it do?
Tough outer layer, gives cell its shape
What is a vacuole?
A “container” for certain substances
What’s the difference between animal and plant vacuoles?
Size
What does a plant cell have that an animal cell doesn’t?
Chloroplast, cell wall
What is a chloroplast?
A disc, contains chlorophyll.
Chlorophyll traps light and converts it into food for the plant through photosynthesis.
Do all plant cells have chloroplasts?
No, eg root hair cell
What are the two methods of cell reproduction?
Cell division and budding
how many times does the number of cells increase with each cell division?
Two
