Cells Flashcards
What substance is a yeast cell wall made of?
Cellulose
Which structure found in a yeast cell would also be found in a prokaryotic cell?
cell membrane
describe three features of a bacterial cell
no nucleus instead has chromosomal DNA, has a cell wall, no mitochondria
What is the function of the sperm cell head?
to break through egg membrane
What is the function of the sperm cell middle piece?
Contains the mitochondria, where respiration happens
What is the function of the sperm cell tail?
allows it to swim
How is the structure of the motor neurone adapted to its function?
The myelin sheath helps insulate it, the axon is short so the nerve impulse can reach the muscle fibres quicker.
What are the benefits of embryonic stem cells?
they have the ability to produce any type of cell, less chance of patients rejecting their own cells.
What are the disadvantages of embryonic stem cells?
There is a risk of the stem cells turning into cancer cells, the longterm effects of stem cell therapy are still unknown.
