Blood and circulatory system Flashcards
Describe the structure of a capillary
-thin cell wall and very very tiny
How do WBCs help to destroy pathogens that have entered our body?
the pathogens produce a chemical that breaks down the pathogen and kills it
How do pathogens enter our body?
through your nose, eyes, mouth and even through wounds or bites
Name the three blood vessels
Artery, vein and capillary
What are the components of blood?
WBCs,RBCs, plasma and platelets
Describe the function of plasma
Plasma helps your body recover from an injury, distribute nutrients, remove waste and prevent infection.
Describe the function of platelets
Their function is to stop the clot the blood at a wound to stop you from bleeding out
What are the chambers of the heart?
Right + left atrium and right + left ventricle
Describe the structure of a vein
- thin cell wall
- wide lumen
Describe the function of WBCs
They attack and kill pathogens that enter your body.
Describe the structure of an artery
-thick cell wall
-narrow lumen
What is the function of RBCs?
They contain a protein called “hemoglobin” and they carry oxygen from your lungs to the rest of your body.
What is the route taken by blood around your heart?
First through the vena cava, right atrium, right ventricle, pulmonary vein, lungs, pulmonary artery, left atrium, left ventricle, and out through the aorta.
Which type of white blood cell kills pathogens?
Phagocytes
Which type of white blood cell produces antibodies to bind to antigens and destroy them.
Lymphocytes
