Cells Flashcards
What is Cell Theory?
- All living things are made from one or more cells
- Cells are the smallest unit of life
- Cells are made up through cell division of other cells
What is Spontaneous Generation? Who was it proven wrong by?
the idea that life came from non-living matter. Proven wrong by Louis Pasteur
What are life processes that occur in cells?
intake of nutrients, movement, growth, response to stimuli, reproduction, gas exchange, waste removal
True or False: both Prokaryotic and Eukaryotic cells are multicellular
False! prokaryotic cells are unicellular and eukaryotic are both multicellular and unicellular
Which has no nucleus? Prokaryotic or Eukaryotic?
Prokaryotic! In Eukaryotic cells, DNA is in the Nucleus
Which out of Prokaryotic and Eukaryotic is larger?
Eukaryotic is larger! Prokaryotic is smaller
(P vs. E) which includes plants, animals, and fungi?
Eukaryotic! Includes Eukarya (plants, animals, and fungi) Prokaryotic includes bacteria and archaea
(P vs. E) which one has membrane bound organelles?
Eukaryotic! Prokaryotic has NO membrane bound organelles
(P vs. E) one type is where most have cell walls, the other is where some have cells walls. which is which?
Prokaryotic: most have cell walls
Eukaryotic: some have cells walls
which out of animal and plant cells have centrioles? What is a centriole?
Animal cells! A centriole is an organelle that helps cells divide. (make copies of themselves)
Which out of plants and animals cells have cell walls?
What are cell walls?
Plant cells! Cell walls: have a rigid frame to provide strength and support
Which between animal and plant cells have chloroplasts?
Plant cells! Chloroplasts are the site of photosynthesis
Which between Plant and Animal cells have larger water vacuoles?
Plant cells! Both have vacuoles however plant cells have larger ones than animal cells
Define an organelle
little organs that control special activities of the cell
What is the Cytoplasm?
a gel-like substance that suspends organelles and contains nutrients needed for the cell
