cells Flashcards
define the structure of a cell
a cell is made up of organelles. they are tiny structures that perform specific tasks within cells, such as producing energy or manufacturing protein.
what are fat cells?
keep the body warm and provide energy
what are white blood cells?
defends the body against disease
what are red blood cells?
supplies oxygen to the body
what are bone cells?
forms the skeleton
what are egg cells?
enables reproduction
what are sperm cells?
they contain the genetic information from the male parent to pass on to the offspring.
what is a cone cell?
light sensitive cell found in the retina of the eye. they enable colour vision
what are gland cells?
produces sweat, hormones and saliva
what are nerve cells?
receives information and transports it to other parts of the body
function of the plasma membrane:
isolation, protection, sensitivity and support
controls entry and exit of materials
function of the nucleus:
controls the centre of the cell and all of the activities
contains DNA
function of the ribosomes:
responsible for protein synthesis
function of the endoplasmic reticulum:
synthesis of secretory products
intracellular storage and transport
detoxification of drugs and toxins
function of the mitochondria:
power house of the cell
cellular respiration occurs here to release energy for the cell to use
produces ATP for the storage of energy
