Cells Flashcards
What does DNA do?
DNA contains the instructions needed for an organism to develop, survive and reproduce
What is passive Transport
Passive transport is the movement of molecules down a concentration gradient and does not require energy.
What is diffusion?
Diffusion is the movement of molecules down a concentration gradient from a higher concentration to a lower concentration. This does not require energy
What is osmosis?
Osmosis is the movement of water molecules from a higher water concentration to a lower water concentration through a selectively permeable membrane
What is active transport?
Active transport requires energy (in the form of ATP) so that membrane proteins can move molecules and ions against the concentration gradient
What happens to plant cells when they go through osmosis?
Plant cells become plasmolysed if the water concentration inside the cell is higher than outside the cell. Plant cells can also become turgid if the connection of water outside of the cell is higher than inside
What do cells need energy for?
The energy transferred by ATP can be used for celluar activities such as…
Movement
Nerve impulses
Cell division
Protein synthesis
Musle contraction
