Cells Flashcards
Cell membrane
Controls the movement of substances into and out of the cell. Provides a barrier from the external environment
Cytoplasm
Contains enzymes, and is the site of most of the chemical reactions in the cell
Mitochondria
Site of reactions for aerobic respiration. Produces energy for the cell
Nucleus
Contains the genetic material of the cell
Cell wall
Made of cellulose. Provides a rigid shape and structure to the cell
Chloroplasts
Site of photosynthesis, where food is made for the plant
Permanent vacuole
Contains cell sap, which stores sugars and salts for the cell
Bacteria Cells
Bacteria are single-celled microorganisms - prokaryotic cells. They have no nucleus but they have a cell wall. They also do not have mitochondria.
Tissues
Groups of similar cells from the same origin that are organised together to perform a particular function.
Organs
Groups of different tissues that are organised in a particular structure to enable a certain function to be carried out.
Organ Systems
Groups of different organs which work together to control fundamental processes.
Muscular tissue
Muscular tissue can contract to cause movement
Glandular tissue
Glandular tissue secretes substances (such as hormones, enzymes, mucus)
Epithelial tissue
Epithelial tissue forms the outer surface lining of most organs to protect them from the environment
