Cell Ultra-structure Flashcards
What do electron microscopes use instead of light?
An electron beam
What are the two main types of electron microscopes?
Transmission electron microscope (TEM)
Scanning electron microscope (SEM)
What does a Transmission electron microscope (TEM) do? What does it show?
It sends a beam of electrons through a thin section of the specimen. This shows the internal structure of the specimen in great detail.
What does a Scanning electron microscope (SEM) use?
It uses a beam of electrons to provide a surface view of the specimen
What view does a Scanning electron microscope (SEM) show?
A surface view of the specimen
What view does a Transmission electron microscope (TEM) show?
The internal structure of the specimen in great detail.
Define ultrastructure
It is the detail of a structure as seen using an electron microscope
What magnification can electron microscopes give?
Magnifications of 250,000 and higher.
What can electron microscopes produce?
Very clear images
What are electron microscopes ideal for?
They are ideal for observing very small structures.
