Cell transport and solutions Flashcards
What is the cell membrane made of and what does it do?
Made of a lipid bilayer allowing some substances to pass but not others
Has:
* Channel proteins
* Carrier proteins
* Cholesterol
* Glycolipids
What is osmosis?
Movement of water across a membrane
What is hypertonic?
Higher concentration of solutes in the cell than out
What is Active Transport?
Movement of substances through the cell membrane that requires energy
What is a solvent?
Substance that dissolves a solute
What is a solution
Mixture that contains both solute and solvent
What is a solute?
Substance that dissolves in a solvent
What is isotonic?
Similar concentration of solutes in and out of cell
What is Passive Transport?
Movement of particles that does not require energy
(Including Facilitaed Diffusion)
What do glycolipids do?
Helps the cell recognize other cells
What does cholerterol do?
Prevents the cell membrane from stiffining
What is hypotonic?
Lower concentration of solutes in the cell than out
What is Facilitated Diffusion?
Movement of a substance across the membrane using a channel protein
