Cell Transport Flashcards
What is active transport?
Active transport is the movement of substances against the concentration gradient. Low to high concentration. Requires energy from respiration
What is osmosis?
Osmosis is the movement of water molecules through a partially permeable membrane, from a dilute solution to a more concentrated solution
What is diffusion?
Diffusion is the spreading out of particles from and area of high concentration to a area of low concentration
Equilibrium is met
3 factors that affect diffusion…
1) concentration gradient
2) temperature
3) surface area to diffuse through
How do you calculate percentage change?
Divide the larger number by the smaller, subtract 1 from result of division and x but 100
What is the effect of isotonic solution on a plant and animal cell?
There will be no net flow of water the cells volume will remain stable
What is the effect of hypertonic solution on cells?
The cell shrinks because it loses water
