Cell Divison Flashcards

Q

Describe the 3 stages of the cell cycle…

A

1) copy: two copies of chromosomes and internal cell structures
2) mitosis: copies of chromosomes move and form two nuclel
3) Split: cytoplasm and cell membranes split to make two identical cells

Q

What is a embryonic stem cell? And adult stem cell and where are they found

A

Stem cells are cells that have not undergone differentiation ie hasn’t become specialised so have potential to turn into any kind of cells
Found in bone marrow

Q

Explain the process of therapeutic cloning…

A

Therapeutic cloning could produce stem cells with the same genetic make-up as the patient. The technique involves the transfer of the nucleus from a cell of the patient, to an egg cell whose nucleus has been removed. Stem cells produced in this way could be transferred to the patient.
