Cell Structure - Description - Function Flashcards
Plasma Membrane
The membrane at the boundary of every cell that acts as a selective barrier, regulating the cell’s chemical compostion.
FUNCTION
protect the cell from its surroundings and able to maintain homeostasis
(semi permeable barrier)
Phospholipid
A lipid made up of glycerol joined to two fatty acids and a phosphate group. The hydrocarbon chains of the fatty acid act as nonpolar hydrophobic tails while the rest of molecule acts as a polar hydrophilic head. Function as biological membranes and form from bilayers
Glycolipid
A protein with one or more covalently attached carbohydrates
FUNCTION
Recognition
Glycoprotein
A protein with one or more covanetly attached carbohydrates
FUNCTION
Cell cell recognition
Peripheral Protein
membrane proteins that adhere only temporarily to the biological membrane with which they are associated
FUNCTION
Transportation to various locations in the cell.
Integral Protein
membrane protein that is permanently attached to the biological membrane
FUNCTION
Transporters
Transport Protein
a protein that serves the function of moving other materials within an organism.
Receptor Protein
the molecule to which the receptor binds
–>may be on the plasma membrane or within the cell
Recognition Protein
proteins that are embedded in the cellular membrane the allow cells to communicate with each other.
Adhesion Protein
proteins that hold cells together
Nucleus
Atom’s central core containing protons and neutrons
The organelle of a eukaryotic cell that contains the genetic material in the form of chromosomes
FUNCTION
The nucleus controls and regulates the activities of the cell
Nucleolus
A structure in nucleus consisting of chromosomal regions containing ribosomal RNA genes along with ribosomal proteins imported from the ctyoplasm
FUNCTION
makes ribosomal subunits from proteins and ribosomal RNA
Nucleoid
A non membrane enclosed region in a prokaryotic cell where its chromosome is located
FUNCTION
Nucleoid is the part of cell which contains primary DNA material. It includes enzymes & proteins that transcribe RNA & DNA.
Ribosomes
Cell structure that makes protein
FUNCTION
Make protein
Rough ER
The portion of the endoplasmic reticulum with ribosomes attached FUNCTION function is to produce proteins.
