Cell Structure And Functions Flashcards

1
Q

What is the structure of the Golgi apparatus?

A

•stacks of membrane-bound flattened sacs
•the cis face is the end closest to the endoplasmic reticulum
•the trans face is the furthest end
•there are a number of lumen and cisternae through which products flow

Q

What is the function of the Golgi apparatus

A

•receives proteins from the RER
•modifies them eg. Adds sugar
•packages proteins into vesicles to be transported inside or outside the cell

Q

What is the structure of the nucleus?

A

•largest organelle
•spherical
•dark patches are chromatin
•surrounded by a nuclear envelope
•has two fluid filled membranes
•has nuclear pores-> allow large molecules through
•nucleolus inside

Q

What is the function of the nucleus?

A

•contains genetic material
•chromatin consists of DNA and proteins
•contains instructions for making proteins
•when cells divide, chromatin condenses into visible chromosomes
•nucleolus makes RNA and ribosomes

Q

What is the structure of the endoplasmic reticulum?

A

•consists of flattened membrane bound sacs called cisternae which are continuous with the outer nuclear membrane
•RER contain ribosomes
