Cell Structure And Function Flashcards
Nucleus
Function:The control centre of the cell.
Contains DNA,which carries genetic information.
Nucleolus inside the nucleus produces ribosomal rRNA
Mitochondria
Function:Powerhouse of the cell
Site of aerobic respiration, producing ATP from glucose and oxygen.
Ribosomes
Function:Sites of protein synthesis
Can be found free in the cytoplasm or attached to the rough endoplasmic reticulum.ER
Made of rRNA and proteins
Endoplasmic reticulum
Rough ER
Function:Studded with ribosomes, involved in protein and synthesis and modification.
Transports proteins to the Golgi apparatus.
Smooth ER
Function:Lacks ribosomes,Involved in lipid synthesis, detoxification and calcium ion storage.
Golgi Apparatus
Function:The processing and packaging centre of the cell.
Modified proteins received from the rough ER.
Packages proteins in to vesicles for transport to the destinations.
Inside/outside of the cell.
Lysosomes
Function:The digestive system of the cell.
Contains enzymes that break down waste materials and cellular debris.
Important for an autophagy(Removing damaged organelles and apoptosis.
