Cell Structure and Function Flashcards
Describe three differences between prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells.
Prokaryotic- Smaller, DNA in single, circular chromosome
Eukaryotic- Larger, Multiple, linear chromosomes in nucleus, Contains membrane bound organelles
Describe three differences between plant and animal cells
Plant- Cell wall, Chloroplasts, Large central vacuole
Animal- No cell wall, No chloroplasts, Small vacuoles (if present)
State the function of Smooth ER
Detoxification of toxins, synthesis of lipids
State the function of the Vacuole
Storage of water, salts, minerals
State the function of the Mitochondria
Site of the latter stages of cellular respiration
State the function of the Chloroplast
Site of photosynthesis
State the function of Ribosome
Site of protein synthesis
State the function of Cell membranes
Controls the movement of substances into and out of the cell
State the function of the Golgi body
Modification and packaging of large molecules into vesicles for export/secretion from the cell.
Word equation for photosynthesis
Photosynthesis: carbon dioxide + water -> glucose + oxygen (chlorophyll and light must be over the arrow)
Word equation for cellular respiration
glucose + oxygen carbon dioxide + water
In which organelle does cellular respiration take place?
Mitochondria
Which cell structure is largely responsible for the detoxification of drugs and alcohol?
Smooth ER
At which cell structure are proteins made?
Ribosomes (may be free floating or attached to the Rough ER)
In which organelle does photosynthesis take place
Chloroplast
