Cell Structure Flashcards
Name the microscope used in school labs
compound light microscope
How many lenses does a compound light microscope use?
2
How do you find the total magnification?
by multiplying the power on the 2 lens
Draw a labeled diagram of a compound light microscope
- eyepiece lens
- objective lens
- stage
- iris diaphragm
- light
- coarse focus knob
- fine focus knob
- nosepiece
What is the function of the eyepiece lens?
to magnify the cells/ specimen
What is the function of the objective lens?
to magnify the cells / specimen
What is the function of the stage?
it is where you place the slide
What is the function of the coarse focus knob?
for approximent focus to allow a clear image to be seen
What is the function of the fine focus knob?
for precise focus to allow a clear image to be seen
What is the function of the light bulb?
to supply light to the sample to let it be seen
What is the function of the iris diaphragm?
controls the amount of light reaching the slide
How do you use a light microscope?
- plug in the microscope and turn on the light
- turn the rotating nose piece so that the lowest power lens is in place
- prepare the sample on the slide and place it on the stage
- using the coarse focus knob raise the stage til it is at the highest point
- while looking through the eyepiece move the coarse focus knoband bring the slide into focus
- use the fine focus knob til the cells are focused.draw what you see
- next, view the specimens under medium and high power
What is a cell?
it is the smallest working unit of a living thing
What is an unicellular organism?
a organism with a single cell
What is a multicellular organism?
an organism with many cells
Draw an animal cell under a light microscope
- cell membrane
- nucleus
- cytoplasm
Draw a plant cell under a light microscope
- cell wall
- cell membrane
- cytoplasm
- nuceus
- large vacuole
- chloroplast
What is a cell ultrastructure?
it is the detail pf a structure of a cell under an electron microscope
What is used to see the ultrasticture ?
an electron microscope
What does an electron microscope do?
used to magnify specimen using a beam of electrons instead of light
Name the two types of electron microscopes and their functions.
transmission electron microscope allows the internal structure to be seen and a scanning electron microscope shows surfaces
What is the protoplasm?
it is all the living parts of a cell
What is the cytoplasm?
it is the living material outside the nucleus of a cell
What is the function of the nosepiece?
to rotate the objective lenses into place
