Cell structure Flashcards
What are the 2 functions of the nucleus?
contains genetic material
controls the functions of the cell
what is the function of the cytoplasm?
contains the components of the cell
[also where most of the reactions take place]
what are the 2 distinct types of cells? [give examples]
Eukaryotic [humans, plants]
Prokaryotic [bacteria]
What is the difference between eukaryotes and prokaryotes?
The genetic information [DNA] is contained in the nucleus in the eukaryotic cell but not in prokaryotes
The DNA is contained in the cytoplasm and plasmids in prokaryotes
What is the difference between the cell wall in the plant cell and the bacterial cell [prokaryotic cell]?
Made of different substances
Plant cell wall : cellulose
Bacterial cell wall : peptidoglycan
Which cell is bigger in size? eukaryotic or prokaryotic?
prokaryotic cells are much smaller in size
What is the function of the cell membrane?
When something goes in and out of the cell
What is the function of the cytoplasm?
Holds all the organelles of the cell in place. Where most reactions take place.
Define cell differentiation
When a immature cell become mature
Explain the adaptations of the muscle cell
Multiple nuclei
