Cell structure Flashcards
List the organelles in a eukaryotic cell:
Cell-surface membrane Nucleus Mitochondria Chloroplasts Golgi apparatus and Golgi vesicles Lysosomes Ribosomes Rough ER Smooth ER Cell wall Cell vacuole
How do plants differ to animal cells?
Plants have:
Cell wall
Cell vacuole
Chloroplasts
What does the nucleus contain?
Contains chromosomes consisting of protein-bound linear DNA
What is the function of mitochondria?
Aerobic respiration
What is the function of the chloroplast?
Photosynthesis
What is the function of the golgi?
Packaging lipids and proteins
What is the function of ribosomes?
Protein synthesis
What is the function of lysosomes?
Contains digestive enzymes involved in waste removal in cells
What is the function of the cell wall?
Maintains the structure of the cell
What is the function of rough ER?
Protein synthesis
What is the function of smooth ER?
Lipid and hormone synthesis
What is the function of the vacuole?
Stores water as cell sap
How do prokaryotic cells differ from eukaryotic cells?
They are smaller. They have:
-Cytoplasm that lacks membrane-bound organelles
-Smaller ribosomes
-no nucleus; instead they have a single circular DNA molecule that is free in the cytoplasm and is not associated with proteins
-A cell wall that contains murein, a glycoprotein.
In addition, many prokaryotic cells have:
-One or more plasmids
-A capsule surrounding the cell
-One or more flagella
