Cell structure Flashcards
Description and the function of a cell wall in Eukaryotic cells
It surrounds the perimeter of the cell it is made of lipids and proteins. The cell wall controls the passage of substances in and out o the cell
Description and the function of the nucleus
The nucleus controls the cell, it holds DNA. Pleural of Nucleus is Nucleous.
More than one chromatin is called nucleoli
The nucleus makes ribosomes
Inside the nuclear envelope enzymes, chromatin, ribosome subunit
The nuclear envelope which is double membrane surrounds the nucleus this is selectively permeable and is made up of a phospholipid layer. This envelope has pores which are called nuclear pores.
The nuclear envelope consists of proteins called nuclear lamina this is important for DNS replication, RNA transcription etc
What are ribosomes
This supports protein synthesis. They are either located on the rough endoplasmic reticulum or floats freely in the cytoplasm
The ribosomes consist of both protein and ribosomal RNA (rRNA)
The ribosomes found in the cytoplasm, which are free produce proteins use within the cell
Bound ribosomes produce proteins that are secreted, incorporated into plasma membrane, and within lysosomes;
Define rough endoplasmic reticulum.
Modifies, transports and stores proteins produced by ribosomes attached to the wall.
The proteins produced by the rough ER are secreted and become attached to the cell wall or act as enzymes for lysosomes
Define Smooth endoplasmic reticulum
Synthesis, transports and stores lipids. They also metabolise carbohydrates , detoxifies drugs, alcohol and poison. The form vesicles and peroxisomes
Peroxisomes- (Detoxify specific harmful substances either produced by the cell or taken into the cell; engage in beta oxidation of fatty acids to acetyl CoA)
Define Golgi apparatus
Modifies, packages and sorts material that arrive from the ….
