Cell Recognition Flashcards
1
Q
how are ‘self cells’ recognised?
A
labelled with unique proteins to prevent lymphocytes destroying them
2
Q
how do lymphocytes know which cells to destroy?
A
other proteins (usually antigens) detected
3
Q
state 4 examples of cells that lymphocytes destroy
A
- cancer cells
- toxins produced by pathogens
- pathogens
- cells from other organisms
4
Q
what causes an autoimmune disease?
A
- the immune system identifies self cells as foreign and white blood cells sometimes attack them
- T regulator cells don’t work so immune respons is not regulated
5
Q
what is rheumatoid arthritis?
A
- attacks cartilage in joints
- causes inflammation and pain
6
Q
what is lupus?
A
- inflammation of joints, skin and organs
- causes fatigue
- no cure but can be relieved with anti inflammatories
