Cell Processes Flashcards
Define ‘Autophagy’
(Self eating) is the process used by eukaryotic cells whereby they recycle old or damaged cellular components in response to stress or damage
Define the structure of Cilia
Small structures in large numbers often found in tubes such as oviducts
Define the structure of flagella
Flagella are larger structures compared to cilia, and in smaller quantities.
What is the function of cilia
To ‘waft’ things
What is the function of flagella
To propel the cell such as sperm
Define passive transport
High concentration to low concentration using no energy
Does not require protein to cross the plasma membrane
Define facilitated diffusion
Requires a protein to cross the plasma membrane opening a channel
Define osmosis
Water moving through a semi permeable membrane
Define endocytosis
Entering a cell (endo=inner/into) within a vesicle
Define exocytosis
Getting rid of waste (exiting) the cell
Transports materials to other cells
