Cell parts/ organelles to their functions Flashcards
Plasma Membrane
Controls what enters and leaves the cell (selective permeability)
Nuclear Envelope
surrounds the nucleus and controls what enters and leaves the nucleus
nucleus
the cell command center, contains the chromosomes and the nucleolus
nucleolus
makes ribosomes
cytoplasm
the jelly like fluid that fills a cell
mitochondrion
the place where cellular respiration happens
Endoplasmic reticulum
Transports molecules throughout the cell
Golgi apparatus
Packages molecules and prepares them to be used in the cell or released from the cell in vesicles
Ribosome
The place where proteins are assembled during translation
Vacuole
A storage depot in the cell for water, minerals, and other molecules
Lysosome
Contain digestive enzymes to break down molecules, old cell parts, or pathogens. “Garbage disposals of the cell”
Peroxisome
Small sacks which help detoxify (they contain peroxidase and catalase enzymes to break down hydrogen peroxide produced by working cells)
Cytoskeleton
Protein filaments that provides shape for a cell and anchors the organelles
Centriole
Aid in cell division in animal cells by assembling and breaking down the spindle fibers
Cilium
Small, hairlike organelles of motion
