Cell Organistion Flashcards
When does differentiation occur?
Differentiation occurs during the development of a multicellular organism.
What do these specialised cells form?
They form tissues, which form tissues, which firm organs, which form organ systems.
Large multicellular organisms eg squirrel have different systems inside them. What do these systems do?
They are for exchanging and transporting materials.
What is a tissue?
A tissue is a group of similar cells that work together to carry out a particular function.
A tissue can include more than one type of cell. In mammals what are three examples of tissues?
Muscular tissue, which contracts for movement.
Glandular tissue, which makes and secretes chemicals like enzymes and hormones.
Epithelial tissue, which covers some parts of the body eg. the inside of the gut.
What do you call a group of different tissues that work together to perform a certain function?
An organ.
What is and organ system?
An organ system is a group of organs working together to perform a certain function.
What is an example of an organ system? And what organs is it made of?
The digestive system (found in humans and mammals) breaks down food and is made of these organs:
Glands- produces digestive juices.
Stomach and small intestine- digest food.
Liver- produces bile.
Small intestine- absorbs soluble food molecules.
Large intestine- absorbs water from undigested food, making faeces.
The digestive system exchanges materials with the environment by doing what?
Taking in nutrients and releasing substances such as bile.
What is differentiation?
A process by which cells become specialised for a particular job.
