Cell Organisation Flashcards
How are cells organised into tissues
Due to adhesion molecules on cell surface membranes which help cells to recognise other cells like themselves and stick to them, exposed section of recognition proteins bind to complementary proteins on the adjacent cell
What is a tissue
A group of specialised cells with similar structure working together to carry out one function
What is an organ and example
A group of tissues working together to carry out one function eg muscle, nerve and epithelium work together in the heart
What is an organ system and example
A group of organs working together to carry out a particular function eg the circulatory system
Where are stem cells found in plant
In meristems in roots and shoots
When do stem cells in meristem become specialised
When plants start to flower cells in meristem become specialised to form the organs that make up the flower
What are hermaphrodite flowers and the four structures they typically have
Those that have female and male structures, typically have sepals, petals, male stamens and female carpels
