cell organelle Flashcards
- The cytoplasm is the jelly-like substance within the cell membrane that surrounds
the cell’s organelles.
Cytoplasm
The cytoplasm houses all the organelles, each with specific functions:
Organelles:
The aqueous component of the cytoplasm, containing dissolved ions,
nutrients, proteins, and other small molecules. It provides the medium in which the
organelles are suspended and allows the diffusion of substances throughout the cell
Cytosol:
The powerhouse of the cell, generating ATP (energy) through
cellular respiration.
Mitochondria:
Sites of protein synthesis, either floating freely in the cytoplasm or
attached to the RER
Ribosomes:
Lacks ribosomes, involved in lipid synthesis and
detoxification
Smooth ER:
Studded with ribosomes, involved in protein synthesis and
processing
Rough ER:
Modifies, sorts, and packages proteins and lipids for transport.
Golgi Apparatus:
Contain digestive enzymes to break down waste materials and
cellular debris.
Lysosomes:
Composed of microfilaments, intermediate filaments, and
microtubules, the cytoskeleton provides structural support, facilitates cell
movement, and assists in intracellular transport.
Cytoskeleton:
Involved in lipid metabolism and the detoxification of harmful
substances
Peroxisomes:
ALLOW THE CELL TO BE
SELECTIVELY PERMEABLE, MEANING
IT ONLY LETS CERTAIN THINGS IN
AND OUT
PHOSPOLIPID BILAYER
PREVENTS LARGE MOLECULES OR
CHARGED MOLECULES LIKE IONS
FROM DIFFUSING DIRECTLY ACROSS
THE MEMBRANE WITHOUT THE USE
OF A CHANNEL PROTEIN.
THE PHOSPHOLIPID BILAYER
ARE USE FOR ANIMAL CELL TO REPRODUCE, THEY RELEASE LONG, STIFF FIBERS CALLED MICROTUBULES THAT SPLIT THE CELL APART DURING CELL DIVISION
CENTRIOLES
SUBSTANCE THAT
DO NOT REQUIRE
STAINING BY DYES
BECAUSE THEY
ALREADY POSSESS
THEIR OWN
COLOR.
