Cell Nucleus Flashcards
Functions of the nucleus
- Store genes on chromosomes
- Organize chromosomes for cell division and the uncoiling of DNA for replication
- Transport regulatory factors via nucleopores
- Produces mRNA and ribosomes
Transcriptionally active
Heterochromatin
Abundant in active, transcribing cells
Euchromatin
Chromosome painting
FISH or Flourescent In Situ Hybridization
Has two membranes, the outermost is continuous with RER and has ribosomes attached
Nuclear envelope
The space between outer and inner membranes
Rough Endoplasmic reticulum space
May serve as a stabilizing filaments, layer of thin filaments which surrounds the nucleus except at the nuclear pores
Nuclear lamina
Formed at sites where the inner and outer membranes of the nuclear envelope are joined
Nuclear pores
Organized from NOR
Nucleolus
Electron dense filaments, formed from newly transcribed rRNA
Pars fibrosis
Seen as circular areas surrounded by rim of electrons dense filaments
Nuclear organizing regions
This is where no one can see the accumulation of ribonucleoprotein particles
Pars granulosa
