Cell Membrane & Osmosis Flashcards
What are the two types of cells?
Prokaryotic (bacteria) and eukaryotic
What are the two types of transportation across the cell membrane and what characterizes them?
Passive and Active.
Passive: always from low to high concentration and is driven by the kinetic energy of molecules
Active: Needs energy (ATP), protein, and moves against concentration gradient (low to high)
What are the two types of Passive transportation?
Diffusion & Facilitated diffusion.
Diffusion: only gases can pass(ie: O2, CO2)
Facilitated diffusion: needs a protein to work, only 1 direction, goes a certain speed – if want faster needs more protein
Osmosis in animal cells, what’s survivable?
Isotonic solution is normal. Hypo/Hypertonic would kill the animal.
Osmosis in plant cells, what’s survivable?
Hypotonic is normal and Isotonic is survivable but just wilting. Hypertonic would kill the plant.
