Cell membrane - Mitosis Flashcards
1
Q
define mitosis
A
cell division that produces genetically identical cells
2
Q
what is mitosis needed for ?
A
cell growth and repair
3
Q
what is interpahse divided into?
A
3 groups - G1, S, G2
4
Q
what happens in G1?
A
cell grows and carries out its normal function
5
Q
what happens in the s phase?
A
DNA replication - each chromosomes becomes double stranded - ATP is stored
6
Q
what happens in the G2?
A
cell grows and checks for damageand repairs the dna before mitosis
7
Q
what are the four stages of mitosis?
A
prophase, metaphase, anaphase and telophase
8
Q
what happens in prophase? 3
A
- the chromosomes condense and become inactive
- centrioles move in pairs to opposite sides of the cell
- nucleus breaks down
9
Q
what happens in metaphase? 2
A
- spindle fibres attach to the centromere of each chromosome
- chromosomes line up in the middle of the cell
10
Q
what happens in anaphase? 2
A
- centromeres divide = separating pairs of sister chromatids
- spindle fibres contract = pull the chromatids to opposite sides of the cell = cell elongates
11
Q
what happens in telophase?
A
- cytokinesis occurs = cytoplasm divides = 2 genetically identical daughter cells
- chromatids form chromosomes
