Osmosis Flashcards
Define osmosis
the net movement of water molecules across a permeable membrane from an area of higher water potential to an area of lower water potential
what is water potential?
the tendency of water molecules to diffuse out or into a solution
what water potential value does pure water have?
0 - it has the highest water potential
what does isotonic mean?
two solutions have the same water potential
what are the three factors that affect the rate of osmosis?
- the surface area
- the water potential gradient
- the thickness of exchange surface
how do plant cells react to osmosis in Hypertonic conditions ?
the water potential outside the cell is lower than inside the cell, so water moves out the cell = the cytoplasm pulls away from the cell wall = the cell is flaccid
how do plant cells react to osmosis in a hypotonic conditions?
the water potential outside the cell is higher than inside the cell = water moves into the cell = cytoplasm pushes against the cell wall = cell becomes turgid
How do animal cells react to osmosis in a hypotonic condition?
the water potential is higher outside the cell = water moves in the cell = the cell has no protective cell wall, so it bursts.
