Cell Membrane Flashcards
The cell membrane consists of what kind of layer?
A layer of phospholipids with embedded proteins, cholesterol and attached carbohydrates. (see slides)
The polar head of each phospholipid is Hydrophilic meaning?
It loves water hence they form both edges of cell membrane
The non polar tails of each phospholipid is Hydrophobic meaning?
It hates water hence they form the internal edge of cell membrane
What does the Cholesterol in cell membrane do?
Helps to stabilise cell
What do integral proteins in cell membrane do?
They act as channels, receptors, for enzymes and transport.
What are Glycolipids?
Glycolipids are lipids with an attached carbohydrate. They’re job is to facilitate cell recognition.
What is the function of the cell membrane?
The cell membrane acts as a barrier between the inside and outside of the cell and controls entry and exit. Its function includes diffusion, transport of materials, permeability and to transmit signals between intra and extra cellular spaces
