Cell Membrane Flashcards
Exocytosis
Moving very large particles out of the cell
Phagocytosis
- the ingestion of bacteria or other material
- called “cell eating”
- ex: white blood cells engulfing bacteria
Contractile Vacuole
A vacuole that expels excess liquid on contraction
Osmosis
The diffusion of water across a membrane
Facilitated Diffusion
Uses transport proteins to help move materials from high to low concentration
Plasmolysis
Contraction of the protoplast of a plant cell as a result of loss of water from the cell
Vesicle
A fluid or air-filled cavity or sac
Concentration gradient
The process of particles moving through a solution or gas from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration
Equilibrium
The balanced internal condition of the cell
Turgor pressure
the pressure of water pushing the cell membrane against the cell wall of a plant cell
Phagocyte
a type of cell within the body that is capable of engulfing and absorbing bacteria and other small cells and particles
Endocytosis
Involves moving large particles into the cell
Ion channel
Allows the flow of ions across the cell membrane
Cytolysis
Occurs when a cell bursts
Isotonic
the total concentration of dissolved solutes is the same in both of them
