cell membrane Flashcards
function
- seperates the intracellcular enviroment from the extracellular enviroment
- controls the entry and exit of substances by being semi-permeable/selectively permeavle
- enables cell recognition, by differentiating between self and non self cells
- plays important roles in cell communication, cell adhesion and the binding of hormones
structure
comprised of a phospholipid bilayer embedded with proteins
phospholipids
hydrophilic head (water loving)
hydrophobic tail (water hating)
types of proteins
integral proteins
peripheral proteins
peripheral proteins
tend to move and are not permanent (enzymes)
integral proteins
are permanently in the bilayer (recpetor proteins, channel proteins and glycoproteins)
cholestrol
enables the cell membrane to be fluid and dynamic by preventing the cell membrane from becoming too solid (only in ANIMAL CELLS)
glycolipids
structure: is a phospholipid with carbohydrate chain attached
role: cell recognition, cell communication, responsing to stimuli, helps with immunity against pathogens
glycoproteins
structure: membrane protein with carbohydrate chains attached
role: is responsible for cell recognition to recognise self cells and non self cells also acts as a receptor for hormones
fluid mosaic model
fluid: refers to the dynamic nature of the cell membrane and the ability of both lipids and proteins to move sideways in the membrane
mosaic: refers to the embedded proteins within cell membrane, refers to the pattern formed by the integral and peripheral proteins within the cell membrane
