Cell mediated immunity Flashcards

1
Q

how is the production of t cells stimulated?

A

-its stimulated by the bodies own cells that have been changed due to the presence of non self material

Q

what are 3 examples of antigen presenting cells?

A

-phagocytes that have engulfed a pathogen and have some of its antigens on its membrane
-any type of body cell that has been infected by a virus because some of the antigens will be on its membrane
-cancer cells as they too have antigens on their surface

Q

what is the process of the production of a range of t cells in cell mediated immunity?

A

-antigen presenting cell is detected by t lymphocyte
-receptor of specific t lymphocyte is a complementary fit into the viral antigen on the cell surface membrane of the infected antigen presenting cell
-sensitised t lymphocyte divides rapidly by mitosis to form a clone
-the clone then develops into killer t cells, helper t cells, suppressor t cells and memory t cells

Q

what is the job of killer t cells?

A

-destroy infected cells by attaching to the antigens on the membrane on these infected cells byt destroying them by direct enzyme action

Q

what is the job of helper t cells? what is are 3 examples of their jobs?

A

-they stimulate other cells involved in the immune response
-stimulate b cells to divide to produce antibodies
-and stimulate the process of phagocytosis
-secrete protein cytokines that help to limit the ability of viruses to replicate

Q

what is the job of the suppressor t cells?

A

-they suppress the immune response of other immune cells
-they switch off the immune response after infected cells have been destroyed

Q

what do suppressor t cells help prevent?

A

-an autoimmune disease where to body attacks its own self cells

Q

where are memory cells found and what is the job of memory cells?

A

-these cells circulate in body fluids and can respond rapidly to future infection by the same pathogen due to the memory cells already have being sensitised and can very quickly produce a large amount of t cells
