cell divison-mitosis Flashcards
what is interpahse
cell carries out normal functions and prepare to divide. cell’s DNA unravelled and replicated. organelles also replicated so it has spare ones and ATP also increased
what is mitosis needed for
growth and repair of tissues
what are the processes of mitosis
prophase, metaphase, anaphase and telophase
what are the two strands of chromosomes attached by
attached in middle by centromere
what are the seperate strands called
chromotids
what are the two strands on the same chromosome called
sister chromotids
what is prophase
chromosomes condense getting shorter and faster. tiny bundles of proteins called centrioles start moving to opposite ends of the cell forming network of protein fibres called spindle. nuclear envelope breaks down and chromosomes lie free in cytoplasm
what is metaphase
chromosomes line up along middle of cell and become attached to spindle by their centromere
what is anaphase
centromeres divide separating each pair of sister chromatids. the spindles contract pulling chromatids to opposite poles of the spindle.
what is telophase
chromatids reach opposite ends of spindle they uncoil to become chromosomes again nuclear envelope forms around each group of chromosomes. the cytoplasm now divides (cytokinesis). now two genetically identical daughter cells
