3
Q

What occurs during prophase?

A

The nuclear membrane disappears. The centrioles go to opposite poles. The chromatin coils into visible chromosomes. Spindle fibers form between the centrioles.

Q

What occurs during metaphase?

A

The chromosomes align at the middle/equator of the cell and the centromeres attach to the spindle fibers.

Q

What occurs during anaphase?

A

The centromeres divide. The spindle fibers pull the chromatids apart to the opposite poles.

Q

What happens during telophase?

A

The chromosomes are at each pole. The cytoplasm divides and a new nuclear membrane forms. The daughter cells enter G1 phase.

Q

What is the difference in plant cell mitosis?

A

There are no centrioles so the spindle fibers appear out of the cytoplasm. The cytoplasmic division is done by a cell plate.

Q

What are haploid and diploid cells?

A

Diploid has a full set of chromosomes (2n) and a haploid has a single set (n)

Q

What is prophase 1?

A

Similar to prophase. The homologues find each other and twist together to form a tetrad.

Q

What is metaphase 1?

A

Similar to metaphase. Chromosomes align on the equator.

15
Q

What is anaphase 1?

A

The centromeres do not divide on each chromosome. Each pair of sister chromatids goes to the opposite pole. Diploid to haploid

16
Q

What is telophase 1?

A

The chromosomes aggregate at each pole. Cytokinesis occurs.

17
Q

What is interphase 2?

A

The nuclear membranes, nucleoli and chromatin reform

18
Q

What is prophase 2?

A

Chromosome reappear. Spindle fibers form.

19
Q

What is metaphase 2?

A

Chromosomes align on equator.

20
Q

What is anaphase 2?

A

The centromeres divide like in mitosis. A chromosome goes to either end of the cell.

21
Q

What is telophase 2?

A

Cytokinesis occurs. 4 daughter cells are produced

22
Q

What is non-disjunction?

A

Too many or too few chromosomes are in each cell at the end of meiosis. Chromosomes do not divide properly. Can happen in anaphase 1 or 2

23
Q

What is turners syndrome?

A

Only one X. A sterile female

24
Q

What is Kleinfelters syndrome?

A

XXY. A sterile male

25
Q

What is Down’s syndrome?

A

Trisomy 21

26
Q

What is Edwards syndrome?

A

Trisomy 18. Severe abnormalities

27
Q

What is Pataus syndrome?

A

Trisomy 13. Severe defects

28
Q

What is the alteration of generations?

A

An alteration of asexual and sexual reproduction. Occurs in moss. Alters between a gametophyte (haploid generation) and sporophyte (diploid generation)
