Cell Division Flashcards
Mnemonic to remember the stages of mitosis:
I play music at the club
Chromosome
Stand of DNA packed into 23 pairs
Diploid
Cell has 2 versions of each chromosome (one from each parent)
Haploid
Half the genetic material
Example of haploid
Gametes
Interphase
1
To prepare for cell division each chromosomes is copied
Prophase
2
The nuclear membrane breaks down so chromosomes can move
Metaphase
3
Chromosome line up in the central of the cell
Anaphase
4
The 2 copies of each chromosome are pulled apart by spindle fibres
Telophase
5
The chromosomes move to different sides of the cell and nuclear membranes reform. Cell begins to split in two.
Cytokinesis
6
The cell completely splits in 2 cells (daughter cells) which are genetically identical to each other, and to the original parent cell.
Which cells divide by mitosis?
Most cells in the body
Which cells do not divide by mitosis, and how do they divide?
Sex cells (meiosis)
Neurons (neurogenesis in some brain regions)
Red blood cells (no nucleus)
What form of reproduction is based on mitosis?
Asexual reproduction
Give 3 examples of organism which reproduce using mitosis
Aphids
Yeast
Malaria parasite
