cell division Flashcards
what are chromosomes made of?
dna molecules ( AT, CG )
what does each chromosome carry?
a large number of genes
in normal body cells, what are the chromosomes normally found in?
pairs
what are the stages of mitosis?
prophase, metaphase, anaphase and telophase
what happens in stage 1?
cell grows bigger, dna replicates, increase number of sub-cellular structures
what happens in stage 2?
complete set of chromosomes is pulled to each end of the cell, the nucleus divides into two nuclei
what happens in stage 3?
cytoplasm and cell membrane divide to form two identical daughter cells
what is a stem cell?
an undifferentiated cell that can develop into one or more types of specialised cells
what are the two stem cells in mammals?
embryonic and adult stem cells
where are adult stem cells found?
in certain body parts of adults and children eg: bone marrow
where are embryonic stem cells found?
early human embryos
where are plant meristems found?
the roots and the shoots of plants
what can adult stem cells differentiate into?
certain types of cells, for example, bone marrow can only differentiate into types of blood cells
what can embryonic stem cells differentiate into?
can differentiate into any specialised cell
what can plant meristems differentiate into?
all cell types and can create clones of the whole plants
