Cell cycle Flashcards
Interphase
The part of the cell cycle where growth and DNA replication take place but no cell division.
What are the three stages of interphase?
G1 (Gap 1- growth phase 1)
S phase (DNA replication)
G2 (Gap 2- growth phase 2)
What is the longest phase in the cell cycle?
G 1
What happens in G1?
- Cell recovers from mitosis
- Normal metabolic processes are happening
- Cell making nucleotides for DNA replication
What happens in S phase?
DNA replication
What is endoreplication?
S phase happens repeatedly without cell division resulting in multiple cells that are connected by the centromere.
The cell ends up with too much DNA at this point
What is gene amplification?
Where certain genes in the cell are amplified as their regular amount might be insufficient for normal cell function.
What is Gap 2?
The cell prepares for mitosis by making spindle fibers by synthesising a-tubulin and B-tubulin
Nuclear envelope needs to be broken down
How is Mitosis divided?
Karyokinesis
Cytokinesis
What are the two types of karyokinesis?
Mitosis:duplication
Meiosis: reduction
