Cell Cycle Flashcards
Cell Cycle
series of events that take place in a cell leading to duplication of its DNA
Mitosis
process of dividing the nucleus
G0
resting phase; cells no longer divide
Trigger Protein
histone
Prophase
nuclear membrane is broken down; chromosomes appear; centrioles migrate (only in animal cells)
Centrioles
The centrioles help in the formation of the spindle fibers that separate the chromosomes during cell division
Metaphase
chromosome align; spindle fibers attach to chromosomes
Spindle Fibers
divides chromosomes
Equatorial Plane
middle of nucleus
Anaphase
chromatids move to opposite ends of the cell with the help of spindle fibers
Telophase
chromosomes stop moving and the nuclear membrane reforms
Cytokinesis
division of the entire cell after the nucleus divides; NOT part of mitosis; differs for plants and animals because plant cells have cell walls
Clevage Furrow
indentation of the cell’s surface during the division of the nucleus
Cell Plate
The cell plate is a structure that forms in the cells of land plants while they are undergoing cell division
Chromosome
a threadlike structure of nucleic acids and protein found in the nucleus of most living cells, carrying genetic information in the form of genes.
