Cell cycle Flashcards
1
Q
Why are cells a certain size?
A
Because of cells grow beyond a certain size they can no longer carry out metabolic functions
2
Q
How do new cells arise?
A
From old cells of the same cell type
3
Q
Why do cells divide?
A
- Growth/differentiation - mitosis enables organisms to grow from a single-celled zygote into a mature organism that might contain hundreds of trillions of specialized cells
- Maintenance - new cells produce to replace worn out/dead cells
- Repair - they can regenerate damaged tissues (finger cut - new skin). Some organisms can regulate entire body parts
4
Q
Define a somatic cell:
A
A cell that is part of the body (eg. skin, blood) (Not gametes - eggs and sperm)
5
Q
Define parent cell:
A
The original cell
6
Q
Define daughter cell:
A
Newly formed cell
