Cell Cycle Flashcards
1
Q
what are the phases of the cell cycle
A
G1 (gap 1) -> S (synthesis) -> G2 (gap 2) - M (mitotic)
2
Q
cyclin dependent kinase
A
- phosphorylates certain serines or threonines on target proteins
- specific CDK’s exist for specific phases of the cell cycle
3
Q
cyclin protein (3)
A
- activate CDK by forming a complex with it
- G1, S, and G2 specific cyclins
- specific cyclins are made and degraded at certain times during cell cycle: G1 specific cyclin only during G1-S phase
4
Q
CDK-cyclin function
A
- complex phosphorylates proteins required for particular phases
- CDK-cyclin in G1 would phosphorylate proteins required to initiate S phase
- may activate or inactivate target protein after phosphorylation
5
Q
caspases function
A
- catalyse cascade of proteolytic events that results in fragmentation of DNA, destruction of cytoskeleton, and breakdown in organelles
6
Q
how is cell number modulated
A
- both cell division and death can be promoted or inhibited by internal and external signals
- two major checkpoints during cell cycle where the cell can be arrested in necessary
7
Q
where are the two major checkpoints for regulation in the cell cycle
A
- before cell enters S phase
- before cell enters M phase`
8
Q
what does the cell check at checkpoints (3)
A
- did the cell grow enough
- is the DNA okay; if not, then repair DNA
- is there already enough cells in the tissue
